๐ด USPA Membership Requirements: Important Update

Danielle, Chuck, Clay, Caleb and Domingo
USPA membership requirements are now in effect for riders who are playing chukkers or have completed 10 or more lessons.
Any rider participating in chukkers must have a current USPA membership on file in order to play. Proof of renewal or registration must be submitted before being mounted for chukkers so we can ensure all players on the field are properly covered and eligible.
For 2026, once a rider has tested up to begin playing chukkers, a Regular Player USPA membership with an active handicap is required, regardless of if you have chosen to play in chukkers or not. Chukker-level riding involves a different pace and risk profile, and this requirement ensures appropriate insurance coverage, liability protection, and safe, fair play for everyone.
Riders who have completed 10 or more lessons but are not yet playing chukkers must register as non-competing members until they begin playing chukkers.
If you are already playing chukkers and have renewed your membership as non-competing, you will need to upgrade your membership. This can be done easily through the USPA member portal.
When registering or renewing, please be sure to list California Polo Club as your host club, which directly supports CPC through USPA voting power and funding.
USPA memberships run on a JanuaryโDecember cycle and are not prorated. Once youโve renewed or updated your membership, please text or email Katty your confirmation so we can keep our records current.
๐ Russ Sheldon 10th Annual Memorial Tournament

The Russ Sheldon 10th Annual Memorial Tournament is coming up May 24-25 at Poway Polo Club in San Diego, and we would love to send a CPC team!
This is a 2-day tournament open to all levels, with a running chukker format on Day 1 and a regular tournament format on Day 2. Pricing is $60/day for 2 chukkers or $100/day for 4 chukkers. Horse rentals are available through George Dill if needed.
If you're interested in joining or forming a team, reach out to Katty - she'll help coordinate.
โ New Safety Rule: Mallet Penalties for Dangerous Play

We are instituting a new safety rule, effective June 1:
Three fouls = you lose your mallet
Hitting your pony is consideredย ย a foul
This rule applies in chukkers and games, is in place for the safety of our members and, most importantly, our horses. Safety is a shared responsibility, and we appreciate everyoneโs cooperation as we enforce this consistently.
๐ Club Apparel, Merch & Jerseys Update

You may have noticed the new design featured here โ and yes, itโs a preview of whatโs coming. ๐
We've been working behind the scenes on updated CPC apparel and jersey designs, and we're excited about where this is heading. We're currently in talks with PoloGear as our apparel partner to support club merch on an ongoing basis, with the quality and consistency CPC deserves.
We know there's a lot of anticipation around new gear, and we truly appreciate everyone's patience while we get this right. More details including ordering info coming soon.
๐ PCAL Update: Tournament Hiatus in 2026

The organizers and clubs of PCAL have collectively decided to take 2026 off, with the league returning in 2027. Clubs felt a year to regroup and reset was the right move.
That said, CPC expects to participate in one or two other competitive leagues, so there will still be plenty of opportunities to play and compete this year. More details will be shared as plans are finalized.
๐ Wishing Ismael a Speedy Recovery
Most of you have probably heard by now but Ismael recently tore his Achilles and had surgery last Friday. He'll be on the sidelines for about 6 weeks as he recovers, and we're all rooting for him.
In the meantime, here's what to expect for chukker players: stick and ball and chukkers will continue as scheduled, and lessons will be available where there's space -- though as always, lesson spots are prioritized for lesson riders.
We'll keep you updated as things progress. Wishing Ismael a smooth and speedy recovery!
๐ฑ Buy, Sell & Trade -- WhatsApp Group
Upgraded to new boots and want to offload your old ones? Looking for a used mallet or have a spare helmet sitting around? We just launched a brand new WhatsApp community for CPC with a group for buying, selling, and trading gear - a great way to find deals or pass along equipment to fellow members.
๐ฟ Trail Ride Buddy System -- WhatsApp Group
For our horse owners, we've also launched a WhatsApp group dedicated to finding trail ride buddies. Whether you're heading out for a solo ride and want some company, or just looking to coordinate with fellow horse owners, this is the place to connect.
๐ค Supporting Our Grooms & Coaches: Tipping Guidelines

If you've been enjoying your lessons or chukkers, consider showing some appreciation for the hard work our coaches and grooms put in every day. Tipping is always welcome and goes a long way.
A good guideline is 10-15%, so roughly $18-25 per lesson or per 2 chukkers as a reference point.
There are a couple of easy ways to tip:
Monthly automatic charge -- a great option for regular riders or boarders who want to tip consistently without thinking about it
One-off tips -- just reach out to Katty and she can process it for you
Tips are always split between Ismael and the grooms, and they're always told who the tip is from. No credit card fees are added - just a small way to say thank you that goes directly to the team.
Thank you for helping us support the people who take such great care of our horses and members.
๐ฆ๐ท Club Trip to Argentina: Now Planned for Fall

Our CPC trip to Puesto Viejo in Argentina will now take place in the fall, from November 15-22.
We made this change to ensure there is sufficient runway for our members to plan for a major international trip. Between end-of-year commitments, Open preparations, and the holidays, a spring timeline didnโt allow enough time to prepare and coordinate travel.
Pricing is $500 per day per person for polo guests, and $250 per day for non-polo guests, but costs decrease with a larger group! For example, 10-15 people would be $400.
If you are interested in joining us, please fill out the form. Guests will need to book directly with Puesto Viejo, but we will provide all the info needed.
๐ช Required Clothing & Safety Equipment Guidelines

A couple of reminders on required gear for chukkers:
Whites are mandatory for all chukker players -- no exceptions.
A NOCSAE certified helmet is required for all chukker players.
Face mask or eye protection is required for every chukker. Either is acceptable, but one must be worn at all times on the field.
Please come prepared so we can keep things moving and everyone safe out there.
๐ด ๐งน Housekeeping
Safety at the Gate: When the gate is open and riders are mounting, please do NOT hit the ball toward the deck or bring it anywhere within the deck-side 15-yard line. This is for the safety of everyone mounting by the gate, no exceptions.
From Katty, and the California Polo Club team
Until next time!
